FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE CAIRO GATHERING!

After hearing about the death of a classmate, a group of friends decided we should not let our remaining years pass without having a fun weekend. What began as a weekend of fun in Memphis rapidly turned into a discussion of “What we can do to help the kids in Cairo”? Several of the individuals in attendance had previously come together to help with purchasing basketball uniforms and reconditioning band uniforms for Cairo High School students. The group decided that there would be a “CAIRO GATHERING every other year in a different city, preferably where Cairo Alums reside.

Ideas regarding other ways to impact or best serve the needs of the students were discussed; positive mentoring programs and networking opportunities all received interest, however, the focus remained on helping students with growth and development.

Pat (Garrett) Nevels suggested we use a motto that best describes what we want to do in terms of helping - “EACH ONE REACH ONE” Our theme and motto for all Cairo Gatherings will remain “EACH ONE REACH ONE”. Joe Willie Baldwin provided T-Shirts with the motto engraved across the front of the shirts.

As we evolve as an organized but fun-loving group, our plan is to take advantage of our many talents, skills, and contacts in order to formalize serious, thought-provoking fundraising efforts that will aid our cause. The group will also locate and honor surviving teachers and mentors.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnnie Bond attended the gathering to renew old friendships and talk about his tenure as the Industrial Arts teacher and Basketball Coach at Washington Junior High School from 1957 to 1969. To quote Mr. Bond “I am really glad to see everyone because we too are his family”. He currently resides with his wife in Nashville, Tennessee and plans to join us in upcoming celebrations.
